Songs of the Past Mutagens and the rebuilt skill tree

Confirmed, and not a spreadsheet yet

Xbox’s store copy for Songs of the Past and CD Projekt Red’s gamescom talking points both mention unique mutagens alongside Geralt’s new chain. The Guardian’s preview went further: new DNA-modifying mutagens that tweak the witcher’s biology and therefore his Signs and steel. Miles Tost, speaking at Opening Night Live, said the ability system was completely revamped to give players more options. Kotaku’s fifty-minute demo called the skill tree deeper and highly customizable.

That is the entire public kit. There is no node-by-node map. There is no list of green, blue, and red mutagen drops in Letten. This page is a prep tool, not a fake tier list of unreleased genes. If a screenshot gallery claims otherwise, it is guessing.

Songs of the Past is a paid 2027 expansion that requires the free Witcher 3 Remastered upgrade on 29 September 2026. The skill-tree work is a Remastered change. The Letten-specific mutagens are expansion content. You will live with the rebuilt tree for months before you ever see a Garden of Thorns drop. Plan around that order.

How to prepare a build without lying to yourself

Do not freeze a 2022 mutation layout and call it Letten-ready. The tree is being rebuilt. Transmog is coming, which is the practical answer if you want Grandmaster looks without the old numbers. Respec room matters more than a perfect December 2022 save.

Practical steps:

1. Park a Toussaint-complete slot as described in Getting Started. Romance flags and vineyard quests are character state. Mutagen colors are not, once the tree changes.
2. After Remastered lands, spend hours in Novigrad or Toussaint on the new tree before you lock anything. The Remastered notes cover camera, finishers, Signs effects, and why HalkHogan’s HD Rework is no longer the lighting answer.
3. Leave inventory space. Unique mutagens are confirmed as a thing you will equip. They are not confirmed as quest rewards, vendor stock, or boss drops.
4. Do not vendor every old mutagen on 28 September. If the new tree still reads colors, you will want a buffer. If it does not, you lost junk, not a Letten key.
5. The silver chain occupies the crossbow slot. A mutagen that buffs crossbows may not buff the chain. Until a tooltip exists, do not spend a respec on that hope.

Combat context the mutagens will sit in

Remastered already changes the floor: retargeting mid-swing, an adaptive camera, new finishers, Sign-led kills, tighter Roach handling, and enemy behavior that is not 2015 pathing. Songs of the Past then adds the chain, Swarmions, Thornblooms, a burrowing centipede, and Count Humbert’s Slumbering Knight. A mutagen that boosts Igni will matter against insects and plants. A mutagen that boosts Quen will matter when Humbert’s tendrils outrange a dodge. A mutagen that boosts vitality will not replace oils.

Alchemy is still the quiet advantage. Golden Oriole before poison blooms. Thunderbolt before a knight. Petri’s Philter if you want Signs to carry a Swarmion burn. New mutagens will stack with that loop or they will replace a slot; nobody has published which. The how to play guide is the combat recap. This page will not duplicate it.

What this tool will not do

It will not rank unreleased mutagens. It will not invent drop tables for the Garden of Thorns. It will not tell you that Blood and Wine mutations are deleted; nothing public says they are. It will not tell you that console players get a different tree. Remastered is the same client family on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2.

When CD Projekt Red publishes a skill-tree image or a mutagen journal, it will belong here and on the updates hub. Until then, the useful work is boring: meet the system requirements, pick a platform, wishlist from the official stores, and keep a save that can walk out of Corvo Bianco. Letten will ask Geralt for new biology. It will not ask him for a spreadsheet you filled in before the nodes existed.
