Songs of the Past Witcher 3 Remastered
Free upgrade on 29 September 2026 — the required path into Songs of the Past.
What Remastered actually is
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered is a free upgrade arriving 29 September 2026 for owners on PC (Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store, and Battle.net), PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. CD Projekt Red is co-developing it with Yigsoft. It is not Songs of the Past. It is the modernized base that the 2027 expansion will plug into. If you skip this build, you skip Letten.
Existing owners of the base game — with or without Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine — receive Complete Edition. Those two older expansions are included in the Remastered package and were granted to current owners around the gamescom announcements. Songs of the Past stays a separate paid purchase; price is TBA. Compare storefronts in the platforms guide and wishlist from the official stores when you are ready.
Visuals and the PC render path
Remastered rebuilds lighting rather than slapping a sharper filter on 2015 assets. Confirmed work includes a global lighting rework, a new shading model, subsurface scattering, GTAO, foliage shading changes, upgraded textures, HDR and tone-mapper work, and stronger ray tracing. On PC, the headline mode is path tracing, with ray-traced hair and Ray Reconstruction in the trailer stack, plus DLSS 4.5, FSR 4, and XeSS 2.0. Native DirectX 12 is mandatory going forward. DirectX 11 is not the future of this executable.
Consoles get the same presentation goals inside their hardware budgets. PlayStation 5 Pro enhancement support is listed. Xbox Play Anywhere is listed for the Remastered SKU. Nintendo Switch 2 receives a native version, not a cloud wrap of the original Switch port. None of that puts Songs of the Past on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, or the first Switch.
Combat, camera, and monsters
The gamescom demos spent as much time on swordfeel as on Letten’s hills. Geralt’s combat animations are being redone so gap-closes and target switches read cleaner. New finishers are in, including Sign-led kills such as the Aard execution shown in the announcement trailer. An adaptive camera pulls in for small duels and eases out when a crowd piles on, which matters once the silver chain starts yanking armored bodies around. That chain is an expansion tool; the camera and animation work underneath it is Remastered.
Enemy behavior is being retuned so monsters do not stand in 2015 patterns while Geralt moves like a 2026 character. Witcher Signs receive new visual effects. Movement and traversal are being tightened on foot and on Roach. If you are coming back after years away, treat the how to play guide as a recap of both the old fundamentals and these new timings rather than a button list.
Progression, UI, and quality-of-life
The skill tree is being rebuilt. CDPR has not published a node-by-node map, so do not screenshot a 2022 mutation layout and assume it survives. Transmog is coming, which is the practical answer to people who want Grandmaster looks without the stats. Quest tracking, looting, menu navigation, and the UI are all on the list. Immersive meditation, an expanded photo mode, refreshed motion blur, tutorial modernization, and new accessibility options round out the non-combat pass.
Rock Paper Shotgun reported that HalkHogan’s HD Rework lighting pack is no longer needed once you are on the Remastered client; treat community lighting mods as optional leftovers, not as a required install. Cross-platform mod support is listed among Remastered goals and is still in progress. Do not delete your Nexus folder on 29 September expecting a blessed, signed, console-safe pipeline that day. Keep local backups. PC mods that patch the old DirectX 11 build will not be a drop-in for a DirectX 12, Windows 11, SSD-only executable.
Why Songs of the Past requires this build
Letten, the chain, new monster kits, and the reworked camera were shown on Remastered code. CDPR is not maintaining a last-gen Songs of the Past. When the expansion launches in 2027, the install it expects is this upgraded Complete Edition. That is why the system requirements jumped: 64-bit Windows 11, DirectX 12 only, SSD with about 70 GB, 12 GB RAM, Ryzen 5 2600 or Core i5-8400, and a GTX 1660 or RX 5500 XT 8 GB class card with 6 GB of VRAM. HDD and Windows 10 dropped out of the tested matrix for the updated build.
At announcement time CDPR said an older version would remain available for people who cannot run the latest client. Phrase that carefully: it is a fallback for the existing adventure, not a side door into Songs of the Past. Remastered is still the path for the 2027 expansion. If your PC fails the new floor, you can keep playing Velen on the older branch; you will not be loading the Garden of Thorns on it.
How to prepare a save before 29 September
Finish or park Blood and Wine so Geralt can leave Corvo Bianco without orphaning quest flags. The getting started guide is the checklist for that. After Remastered lands, spend a few hours in Toussaint or Novigrad just to feel the camera, Roach, and Signs before you freeze a “Letten-ready” slot. Builds will shift when the skill tree rework hits; leave room to respec. Then wait. Songs of the Past is still a 2027 paid expansion, and no store page that wishlists it is a launch button.
